Interview: Aneessa

Aneessa, your musical journey is truly fascinating. Can you share more about your early days in Saint-Etienne, France, and how your exposure to diverse musical genres fueled your passion for singing and performing?

Absolutely! Growing up in Saint-Etienne, I was immersed in the arts, especially modern jazz and contemporary dance, thanks to my family’s influence. The rich musical environment at home sparked my interest in singing. I began showcasing my talents with soulful renditions of Jazz, Soul, and Pop covers in Parisian bars, laying the groundwork for my journey into the world of music.

Your early experiences have evidently shaped your musical career. Can you recall a pivotal moment when you decided to transition from covering songs to creating your own original music?

The shift to original music happened organically through collaborations, especially with my husband Michael B. Sutton. We started crafting music that reflected my unique style, blending dance, smooth jazz, and urban adult contemporary genres. A key moment was the success of my covers of “BACK TO LIFE” by Soul II Soul and “Just To Be With You,” both reaching the number 5 spot on the Billboard charts.

Your ability to seamlessly transition between genres is impressive. How do you maintain this distinct musical identity as you navigate dance, smooth jazz, and urban adult contemporary styles?

Your cover of “Just To Be With You” gained significant success, even being covered by Freda Payne. How did this achievement influence your career and artistic direction?

Staying true to myself and drawing from diverse influences is key. Collaborating with Michael B. Sutton and other talented individuals allows us to brainstorm ideas, craft melodies, and arrange the music, infusing it with my personal touch. This collaborative approach helps me move effortlessly between genres, creating a sound that’s uniquely mine.

The success of “Just To Be With You” was a game-changer. It not only brought recognition in the United States but also established me globally in world music. Collaborating with legends like Freda Payne affirmed that my music could resonate worldwide. It inspired me to explore new creative avenues and continue pushing boundaries in my artistic expression.

Working closely with your husband, Michael B. Sutton, in your creative process is intriguing. Can you elaborate on how this collaboration contributes to the unique sound of your music?

Collaborating with Michael is a harmonious process. We draw inspiration from personal experiences and emotions, bouncing ideas off each other. This synergy allows us to craft melodies and heartfelt lyrics that resonate with listeners. It’s a shared journey where each person brings strengths to the table, resulting in music that reflects our collective passion and creativity.

Your music explores themes ranging from love to societal issues. How do your personal experiences and influences shape the messages in your songs?

My lyrics are reflections of my journey and observations. Themes like love, resilience, gratitude, and societal issues deeply move me, and I channel those emotions into my music. Each song tells a story, whether celebrating commitment in “Just To Be With You” or inspiring perseverance in “Gonna Be Alright.” I aim to touch hearts and souls with a diverse range of themes that resonate.

Looking forward, what are your long-term goals as an indie musician, and how do you envision your growth in the industry?

Long-term, I aim to expand my music career, reach a wider audience, and create impactful music alongside Michael B. Sutton. I see a journey of artistic fulfillment where my music continues making a positive difference. Growing as an artist, connecting globally, and contributing meaningfully to the industry are at the core of my aspirations.

With the music industry evolving, how do you see the future of music, and what role do you hope to play in this ever-changing landscape?

The future involves greater integration of technology, and as an artist, I’ll adapt to these changes. Leveraging emerging platforms, I aim to connect with a global audience. My role is to continue creating resonant music, embracing new opportunities, and being a positive force in an evolving industry. It’s about staying true to the art while embracing innovations that shape the future.
